Calling for ten different types of asphalt exceeding 26,000 tons, the Midtown Tunnel project is a relatively large job. Over the course of a year, crews installed asphalt paving and milling that met all design specifications. In addition, Branscome paved around the existing Virginia Port Authority facility in order to repair and refurbish damaged or relocated pavement.
This project caused difficulties, as asphalt delivery in the tunnel could not be accomplished with a typical dump truck. To combat this, Branscome used flowboy trailers and single axle short trucks.
The Midtown Tunnel is the first of its kind to be equipped with an unseen corridor running the length of the tube for emergency exit.
